Korean Barbeque at 火爐 Hwaro, Melbourne
Sep 3rd
Monday 9 August 2010
I actually laughed at my own stupidity thinking back on how we actually find this place. Walking in the opposite direction as well as figuring out which road is which road here and there takes us more than 30 minutes of walk.

Good thing we finally found this very place that was recommended by a friend. It was our first night there in Melbourne and the first dinner we had was Korean food!

Entering the place with a low light setting where i could see that 100% of the people there were Asians(Most Koreans), a very friendly efficient staff ushered us to this very place next to this wall. The wall full of scribblings – Not something new though but i was happy reading some of the stuffs written then, some by fellow Malaysians! Lol.

As usual, there’ll be the side dishes (ban chan) served in Korean BBQ Restaurants which includes the must have Kim Chi!

(Bul-Go-Gi)Grilled Marinated Beef AUD $18.90 – 4/5
Marinated Beef Pork Ribs AUD $18.90 -4/5
Mushroom AUD $5.00 -4/5
The Pork Ribs were pretty good and the marinated beef was just awesome! Perhaps it’s the sauce that they used to marinate them, but one thing i’m sure that the meats in Melbourne taste better than the ones in Malaysia, especially the beefs!!
Of course, it all depends on how you barbeque them.

The girlfriend did barbeque some of the meat herself too, prolly better to do it yourself sometimes to get more satisfied at the end of the meal Lol.
We had a staff helping us from time to time and the meats served were just nice. <3
Oh and you noticed the mushrooms? Mushrooms are our favorites so well, we loved it!

Tofu Soup AUD 25.00 – 4/5
We both love this Tofu Soup very much. With mushrooms and lots of tofu with assorted vegetables along with some spices, this single dish had us extremely full at the end of our meals. The portion was quite big actually but we were satisfied!

Steam Rice AUD $2.00
At the end of the day, we had quite a good dining experience with great customer service provided by the staffs. The food was good and i actually like it more if compared to Daorae Korean BBQ in KL.
*Maybe i should frequent Daorae more to try out more of their available choices.
Of course, the person you’re eating with often plays quite an important role and that makes the first dinner in Melbourne memorable for me personally. =)

Would definitely go back there if i get the chance to go to Melbourne again!

Awesome Vietnamese Beef Noodles at Mekong, Melbourne
Aug 22nd

Wednesday 11 August 2010
Our very 3rd day there in Melbourne that is. Waking up hunting for lunch under the drizzling rain on the streets of Melbourne. Mekong is one of the many food places recommended by a few friends when i was still planning on this trip.

The place was fully packed with mainly Asians and i could already smell the soup when we enter into Mekong. Only managed to find a place for ourselves beside the wall and ordered what we wanted.

Durian Smoothy – AUD $4.2
Rating – 3/5
Hot tea is available for free at every table and i really recommend you not to order any drinks and just go along with the tea if you’re on a tight budget. However if you want to order drinks, i’ve tried the Durian Smoothy and i think it’s nice. =D

Rice Paper Rolls (Chargrilled Chicken) 2pcs – AUD$4.5
Rating – 2.5/5
Don’t ask me why we ordered this but well i just think that it’s just so so only. With slices of chicken and lettuce with other ingredients, the sauce that goes along with it does not satisfy my stomach. Something is lacking i feel.

Broken Rice with Chargrilled Chicken – AUD $9
Rating – 3/5
This is what the girlfriend ordered and i tried thinking that it was just average. Nothing more i can say about it.

Beef and Beef Balls Noodles – $9.5
Rating 4.5/5
With a strong base of beef bone soup, this is one of the best food I’ve ate in Melbourne. Served with awesome juicy beef meats and beef balls, i couldn’t help but to finish it though the portion was relatively bigger than what i’ve expected! The soup was cooked pretty well and balanced where the meats are really tasty.

The chili there served little purpose though.
Anyways, in my opinion, if you were to visit Mekong in Melbourne, just order the Beef Noodles as i think that the other food available there are just average only, a few online searches would further justify why i said so.

I guess the famous personalities was there just because of that single dish only. Cheers!

Soup Restaurant, House of Chinatown Heritage Cuisine at Paragon, Singapore
Mar 28th
2 weeks back, i went to Singapore to celebrate her birthday. =)
but being a useless bf myself and not having a complete plan that is, i actually panicked and was scratching my head thinking of what to do, where to bring and such. Headache much.

Ended up at Paragon, went to this place Soup Restaurant which the gf decided so then. Just because she went to another branch and said that the food was delicious so we went to this place for dinner.

Okay so it was quite a nice and comfy place, but hey for a birthday for someone special i somehow felt bad about this then. Needing to stand in a line to wait to be brought into the place for dinner double that feeling there and then.

The Food hmmm.

Hand Chopped Minced Pork Meat with Salty Egg – 2/5
Looks nice on the menu with simple straight forward description but when it came and i had my first try on it i was a bit tad disappointed. The pork weren’t really well cooked and it was salty, a bit too salty that is.
Not a good start huh?

Kangkung Sambal Belacan – 3/5
Ordering this pretty ordinary dish that is widely available back in Malaysia makes me comparing it straight away when it came. To my surprise, it was at least above average. The Sambal Belacan wasn’t too spicy but overall the dish is a bit too oily.

Claypot Tofu -4/5
This is one awesome dish which makes me nom nom nom all the way. Of course, when it came i was a bit surprise because from my knowledge, claypot tofu normally consists of a few types of vegetables along with the Tofu itself. But this alone its just the Tofu.
The specially made sauce which was added on the Tofu made the dish awesomely delicious but if you’re pretty particular about oily food, then you might not want to order this then.

Ling Zhi Lean Pork Soup – 3/5
This soup is pretty fine to me. Just a bit too sweet and the pork meat are not edible (Too Hard to Chew).

Soup of the Day – Chicken soup with Corn – 3/5
This soup is just normal. There’s corn and there’s chicken and it taste just right. Ok i’m pretty lazy at describing about it already then.

For all you know, at this time of me typing out all this, i’m already having this very guilt in me for not having a perfect birthday dinner plan for the gf which i was hoping to have for her. Furthermore, the food served at this very place doesn’t have any wow points to be told as well.
I’m such a lousy guy right?

but i did enjoyed my time being with her then. =X
*the bill came near to SGD50

Social Session at Craft Brews Brewhouse & Restaurant, Mutiara Damansara Petaling Jaya
Jan 11th
Craft Brews, one of the latest restaurant in town that is unique all because they have already step into the online social media scene way before the venue was officially launch!
Following people on Twitter and having a Facebook account bringing out the curious cat was one smart approach i must say as most F&B outlets around don’t even give a damn about online social media and the power of internet marketing/advertising.

Anyways, we had a small gathering session just last Friday night where bloggers and tweeples were invited to fellowship and perhaps get to know each other over beers and food!

One of which i’ve not been to for quite some time already. The place was pretty warm and cosy, one of the type of venues which i would definitely ask some close friends to chill around, perhaps some private sessions.

Just look at the colors of the beers available at Craft Brews!

These beers were being said to be unfiltered where the beer menu features top-notch craft beers which are unique and rare. Specially catered for those beer tasters who seeks for quality in beer drinking. Quite sophisticated eh?

The food served that night was pretty awesome and its definitely not good starting my 2010 that have me going down the FATTER way, but the ribs played quite a big role tempting me as i fell for it. I thought that the eggplant was good as well!
Anyways Craft Brews served food from Ribs to Lamb Shank to the common Chicken plates. Pastas, burgers and sandwiches were included in their menus as well.

Had a lecture on beers with some brief history and ways to beer tasting and such. Pretty clueless from the start till the end and couldn’t help to noticed some other wandering souls there as well. Aha!

There were some game session after that giving out vouchers and colorful bottles which i didn’t get to play because i’m bad at differentiating the different kinds of beer. =(

Anyways, meet the best beer of Craft Brews, the Monster Green Lager. You have to try it yourself to find out why Craft Brews claimed that as their best beer. Which is available all year round!

Well if you’re around the area then do give this place a tr, with good companies i’m sure you’ll enjoy it pretty much!

and oh don’t forget the colorful beers!!

Restaurant Chardin Sea View Seafood Village @ Port Dickson
Nov 20th
It was like a month ago that i went to this place for dinner with a few close friends while we were at Port Dickson for a break over that weekend.

Restoran Chardin Sea View Sea Food Village at Port Dickson.

We were pretty clueless that time and drove around for like approx. 10 minutes and just decided to dine at this very place when we passed by the restaurant.

We were hungry and it seems like a decent place to us with lots of customers there then.

Did the ordering within 5 minutes and started taking pictures hmm.

The girls in the picture above are Melissa, WeiRu, Mun and May. Chee Hwa refuse to take a picture with me and Andy in the second picture because he thinks he’s too handsome for us.
So right, straight to the point. The food!

Seafood Taufu (Fried Taufu with Seafood Toppings) 3/5
I love this dish just mainly because i love both Taufu & Seafood!! Frankly speaking if you ask me how it taste like, it was rather plain where the taste wasn’t fully brought out when it was cooked. There were prawns and eggs along with the Taufu.

Fried Prawn Paste in Butter Style 4/5
This on the other hand was quite tasty the prawn paste were well fried and i like it especially because it was fried with these curry leaves that made the whole dish smells and taste much nicer. Then again, i like it wet style where it wasn’t very very dry where some restaurants will serve.

Steam Sek Pan Fish 3/5
Alright for a seafood restaurant like this, i was actually expecting for the fish to be a bit more fresh but to me it doesn’t seem so, anyways, it was pretty edible of course and it was just as normal as any other steam Sek Pan fish out there. Not much difference.

Fried Kangkung with Belacan 4/5
Quite a well known Kangkung dish in Malaysia i must say. With just Belacan and Garli, this very dish is among one of the favourite dish among Malaysians. A simple dish that is not that simple to prepare where the Belacan must be prepared well and i think that this one i had in Port Dickson was not bad at all!

Siong Tong Lala (Clams) 3.5/5
One of the more common way of cooking clams and the freshness of the Lala was still okay in my opinion. The ginger slices made the “soup” tasty and i was enjoying the soup more than the clams if you ask me. There were a few other hungry friends that time so i didn’t manage to get alot of these then Haha.

Black Pepper Deer Meat 2.5/5
Last but not least, we had this. Quite a spicy dish i must say that they had too much black pepper on it. I had just a few piece then i was already drinking 2 cups of water down my stomach. Not like we requested it to be extra spicy then. I believe this one would be a fantastic dish if not because of its over spiciness. Does such word exist? Lol

So that’s about it. Overall the place was pretty good, nice environment and atmosphere but the food was not up to standard i think. I know that Port Dickson isn’t that much of a tourist attraction anymore where they might get lesser customers out from the town but i think that the standard should be there then.
However, the whole trip down to Port Dickson was awesome! Read about it here. =D
Oh and here’s the price for the food.

Reasonable? Hmm

Restoran Yong Tou Foo Chan Chan, Manjalara Kepong
Oct 2nd
This was a way backdated post. It was on the 7th of September 2009 that i went to this Restoran Yong Tou Foo Chan Chan located in Manjalara, Kepong with my mom, sister and girlfriend for dinner.

Totally no clue of the existence of this very shop though i stay around the area for years, it was my mom who suggested this place giving thumbs up for the food over here.

With half the place occupied at that time which is 9PM, i would say that this is one place that people love going. Yes i always have late dinner.

Mom quickly placed her orders with us waiting hungrily. Soon enough the food came, pretty fast i must say!

Fried Wan Tan/Dumplings and Brinjal 4/5

Ladyfinger 3.5/5

Tau Foo 4/5
Its been quite some time since i had Yong Tou Foo already and i was loving it too bits getting the food into my mouth as soon as it was served. The fried dumplings are one of my favourites while the brinjals, lady finger and tau foo were pretty delicious as well, not too salty nor tasteless as well. It was decently good. Not to mention that the soup was good as well, you know some of the soup served with the Yong Tou Foo is just so so only, almost tasteless and so but this one was very delicious.

Yau Mak Choy – 4/5
One of my favourite vegetable dish. Haha. What can i say more, it was just nice, not too oily that is!

Vinegar Pork Leg/Chu Kiok Chou 4/5
This one is extremely awesome, very sour to my liking and the meat was well cooked and i had a few good bites on the soft and tender meat. Well my girlfriend said her mom cooked much sour ones, would like to try it one day.

Hakka Meat 4.5/5
One of the famous dish(Jiu Pai Choi) of this place, this very dish is a bit starchy, some would not like it but for me i love it to bits, the meat were quite soft as well and its delicious, quite an authentic Hakka dish i must say!

Wine Chicken 5/5
Haven take this in ages, i was looking for it and when it was served i quickly had a spoon of the soup which was quite thick filled with the scent of wine. Though my mom said it was a bit too salty i loved this very dish and drank quite a lot of the soup. The meat were deliciously cooked with the ingredients and such. Must try dish!

Assam Kampung Fish 3/5
Last but not least we had this one dish above. It was just okay, above average but not too awesome. The required ingredients that gives the taste were there just that its not enough. Well the other dishes compensated for that!

Yes i know it was a bit too much for 4 person but hey we had quite an awesome dinner and that alone doesn’t happen every single day so i don’t mind! Haha, it was very very satisfying i must say, those who are staying around the area must go and try it!

So here’s the bill that came and for that amount of dishes we had plus i think that the food were quite awesome, i must say that its definitely worth it paying RM78.30 for this dinner.
VERY very satisfying!
