The 13th General Election of Malaysia was held on the 5th of May 2013. The election which resulted in disgusts by majority urban Malaysians pointing their fingers to Barisan Nasional on various allegations. Since then, Anwar Ibahim – the leader of Pakatan Rakyat (Opposition Party) in Malaysia has called for a peaceful assembly at Kelana Jaya Stadium where he’ll address the crowd on the issues raised during this recent election of Malaysia.

According to MalaysiaKini, the amount of assembly participants went up to as high as 100,000 people with a lot more trapped on LDP highway. Tons of people were seen parking far away from the venue and walking towards the stadium. Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim arrived at the venue around 10PM with cheers from the crowd.

It was said that Malaysians came as far as Johor/Kedah to be part of this assembly.

Assembly participants were called to wear black to the venue as a silent protest to what many have claimed that the recent Malaysian Elections is the dirtiest election ever in Malaysian history. So it’s over. Congratulations Barisan Nasional for winning the elections. Congratulations Pakatan Rakyat for winning the popular vote.

Thank you for coming out to vote. A turnout of more than 80% is something truly applaudable.

Here’s one thing which may differ from what a lot of people are saying:

This was NOT a dirty elections day.
It was a reasonably fair elections day.
The elections system, in place since years ago however, is another story all together.

To all voters, you must understand that this happened because of ONE THING, and ONE THING ONLY. Deeply entrenched SPR gerrymandering, which has existed since eons ago, and is something we entered the elections fully aware of, with both eyes open, but were unable to overcome this round.

You should not be able to LOSE the popular vote and still win the elections by such a HUGE parliamentary margin.

Nothing else is a real major factor. Not the ‘phantom voters’ , not the vote buying, not the inaccurate electoral roll, not the scare tactics, not the postal votes.

All the ‘dirty’ tactics are in place as a distraction, nothing more.

Even if everything was cleaned up, and there was no vote buying, no phantom voters, no postal votes irregularities…

…PR would STILL LOSE (Lose less, but still lose).

Saying otherwise would be like saying you lost a 1 on 1 basketball game with Michael Jordan because you weren’t wearing the right shoes, or had a bad breakfast.

WHY PAKATAN RAKYAT LOST:

The way our parliamentary system is drawn out is so that BN can retain power by winning the non urban areas in Malaysia.

BN can lose EVERY SINGLE MAJOR URBAN CITY, and STILL win the elections. BN segments the country into…

Places which you can’t control with an iron fist, and people don’t really need you (urban) – lump them into a few seats.

vs

Places which really, really need your little handouts (non-urban) – break them out into many seats.

You can win the Malaysian elections with less than 20% of the popular vote. This is not a secret.

This is why PR lost.

Previously when BN held the popular vote you could argue that it didn’t matter because it’s still the will of the people.

Now, you really can’t, because for the first time in history, more people voted against BN, and it’s really not the will of the people now, so gerrymandering sticks out like a sore thumb.

HOW BN KEEPS BLATANT GERRYMANDERING UNDER CONTROL

This issue is however, hidden in the claims of ‘phantom voters’ , vote buying, inaccurate electoral roll, scare tactics, postal votes.

BN throws up 5 intentionally bad election practices, PR picks up on it, and makes a big deal out of it.

BN ends up fixing (poorly) a couple of issues, and then claims elections reform. While everyone is so fixated about stopping Bangladeshis at polling stations, and extremely soluble indelible ink, no one really champions the gerrymandering to any great extent. Possibly because it’s a much drier and less outrageous subject…

…and everybody forgets that if…
You can win the Malaysian elections with less than 20% of the popular vote.
…the ‘bangla’ in the corner doesn’t really matter much.

It is highly likely that PR resources after today will be spread thin covering the numerous election issues rather than focusing on the one that REALLY counts.

So congratulations BN also for the amazing ‘wag the dog’ tactics over the years. I wish you’d put such electoral genius to good use in running the country.

ps. If you think this is too smart for BN, you’re probably right.
This entire gerrymandering system was constructed before the previous 2 prime ministers. Everyone else in BN today is just reaping the ‘benefits’.

ps. I’m not an armchair critic. I’ve done everything from voter registrations in shopping complexes to the entire slew of election duties in 3 elections.

I’m going to say something that most people are not going to like hearing, and I’m saying this because of the huge amount of black on my facebook wall.

Did you, any of you, really think that PR would sweep the elections? Put aside the dirty campaigning, and election tactics, did you really think PR would win?

From what i’ve seen over social media over the last few months, I thought that PR would win more seats. I believed that there would be a bigger change, I believed that the people would put into action what they were so vocal (online) about. But then I stopped myself and looked at the people in my social circles, the people I interact with online. We are a tiny, tiny middle class online savvy minority. It is because your social circle expected a certain outcome that you did too. But we do not represent the majority, and we don’t even interact with them. Do you really expect to predict how they will vote? My father is Sarawakian, and I lived there for many years of my life. I lived in Kuching, but I know that in the interior and rural areas there are so many Malaysians who are not like you, who are not like me. Did I expect them to vote for PR, no. Did I expect them to vote for BN, yes. Why? Because that is all they see, that is what they know, the bribe money that they get means so much to them because they have close to nothing. And it’s sad to say that that is the majority that we do not know.

So instead of turning your profile pictures black, if you really believe in change and the party you support, start planning now. Start the campaign to win the hearts of the people outside the urban areas, the people in the heartland. We know what’s going on, they don’t. Go talk to them.

And Malaysians, get to know the other Malaysia. Don’t criticise them for voting the way they feel is right. Speak to them, get to know them, understand their plight, their needs, their wants. Then campaign to them, the urbanites are practically campaigning for you already.

And don’t wait until a few months before the elections to campaign. Start now. Start fighting for measures to be put in place for a better electoral system now. Start making those in power more accountable for their actions. Start making your candidates accountable for the promises they made. Stop allowing mudslinging and racism and sexism to flourish in our government. You won’t stand for it, make your candidate not stand for it. Make them fight for a proper democracy over the next 5 years. Then we can see a change. It doesn’t happen overnight. it doesn’t come with one day every five years. And it definitely won’t come if you give up.

And make the change in you.
You want our politicians to stop being racist and sexist, then stop doing it yourself.
You want our government to stop being corrupt, then stop corruption in your own life.
You want cleanliness and transparency in our country, live clean, live transparent.
You are one of the atoms that make up Malaysia, don’t ask for the changes that you don’t live by.
Don’t be a hypocrite and ask the people in power to be any different from you.

Take the small victories. No one ever said that the journey would be short or easy.
Did anyone ever think that PR would make inroads into the birthplace of UMNO, Johor? I didn’t, but they did.
Did anyone expect 80% of registered voters to turn out to vote? I didn’t, but they did.

In 2003, BN won 198 seats.
In 2008, BN won 140 seats.
In 2013, BN won (as of time of posting) 132 seats (with 6 seats uncalled).
So whatever it is, it is still a small victory for PR.
And now the question is what will the numbers be in 2018?

Gandhi took 32 years to fight for independence.
Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years in the fight to end apartheid.

And we’ve been trying for what 10 years?
Come on Malaysia, grow up.
Yes, you’re sad, but a fight is a fight, it goes on.

Democracy doesn’t happen overnight, democracy is a journey.
Just because there are hurdles and obstacles in your way doesn’t mean you give up.
You train for the next race.
And maybe that one you’ll win.

Unhappy Malaysians has resorted to Facebook to express their dissatisfaction on the 13th General Election of Malaysia. It was just hours ago that quite a number of people on my Facebook friend list have changed their profile picture to an all black picture. The number is expected to increase with more Malaysians joining in the silent protest on World’s number one social media platform – Facebook.

This happened due to the fact that a lot of people think that the 13th General Election of Malaysia is one of the dirtiest election ever. Malaysians are not convinced with the credibility of the Electoral Commission of Malaysia where various issues were raised on voting day itself.

However, the reason to why people changed their Facebook profile picture to an all black image is because of the fact that there were cases of blackouts at several stations which resulted in a win by Barisan National, the political party which received tons of negative remarks in the past.

Extra ballot boxes containing uncounted votes appeared magically after a blackout and recount was called for later on. The fact that voting stations were closed by 5PM and the ballot boxes only appeared near midnight was not convincing at all and many believed that the there were manipulation of votes in between the blackouts.

Well. Pray for Malaysia.

Fact is, nothing on this earth will be 100% fair and clean. Fact is, we did what we could, 80% of registered voters turned out, BRAVO.
Fact is, we are marching towards a better future an a better future doesn’t come overnight.

It’s the last day of April 2013 and there’s only 5 days left to the 5th of May, the 13th General Election of Malaysia. Today, a bunch of DJs from 988 Radio Station staged an online silent protest through facebook.

Those who joined in the silent protest include DJ Cheryl 欣怡, DJ Anson 阿晨, DJ Min 皓敏, DJ May 子, DJ Jason 潘小潘, DJ Leaf 林丽叶, DJ 湘君, DJ Athena 奕卉, DJ Sam 大宝, DJ YinYin 盈盈, DJ PM 彪民, DJ Nick, DJ KK Wong, DJ Kian 阿健, DJ 小马.

Quite a number of them uploaded a BLACK & WHITE picture on their Facebook profile page/fan page. KK Wong even stated this – “我有我自己的选择，电台所播出的广告不代表我的立场” which translates to “I have my own choice/decision, what which was broadcasted through the radio station doesn’t represent my personal view/voice”.

This was especially significant due to the fact that recently, Malaysian radio station air waves was dominated with quite a number of political messages by this particular political part as part of the advertisement during broadcast period and some of the messages in it were deemed inappropriate/misleading and unbased.

Some message even has a subtle threathening tone in it as well and there were tons of individuals who are annoyed with the fact that mainstream media has becomed so skewed towards one side.

Which side is it, which party is it, that’s up to you to go think about. Thumbs up to those who dare to stand out! Let’s just hope these DJs won’t get fired.

In the past few days, I noticed quite a number of Malaysians changing their Facebook profile picture with these “Ubah Logos” and this whole social movement has gained quite a lot of interest where I see more and more people doing so on Facebook. It was kind of cute in a way with a smiling bird being in the center of attraction and I thought it will be interesting to gather all the pictures together and compile it into one single post.

It was the 2nd day of the Chinese New Year just yesterday and we Malaysians have something to brag about. We have South Korean Superstar PSY to entertain us in a high school at noon time. That’s quite something I must say and PSY Park Jae Sang who is under YG Entertainment not only performed once, but TWICE!! Yes TWICE.

Check out some of the pictures taken during PSY’s first performance in Malaysia!

Anyway, it seems like the people who were there had fun watching PSY’s performance live. Good for them. For me, I had fun reading random funny tweets about the event and there were a few hilarious videos uploaded on YouTube as well.

Korean superstar Psy handed Malaysia’s ruling party a slap in the face when he declined to come onstage to toss the traditional ‘yee-sang’ with embattled Prime Minister Najib Razak and other top members of his BN coalition at a gig to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

The dull response from the Penang audience was unmistakable when the PM was unwise enough to ask them – three times no less -, “are you ready for BN”. The ‘Nos’ drowned out the ayes. Yet when Najib had asked if the audience was ready for Psy, they had gone wild, screaming ‘Yes’ with all their might.

Worst was yet to come for Najib. In his speech, he mistakenly called the Han Chiang College ‘Han Yang’ several times, drawing loud boos. The implication that he was not sincere was clear and from then on, there was no way for him to win the crowd back to his side.
