In a recent event (Astro A-List SEA Director Focus 2016), it was revealed that the new session of Astro A-List Southeast Asian (SEA) Director Focus will be featuring 6 award-winning and critically-acclaimed movie directors from SEA (South East Asia). Riri Riza (Indonesia), Garin Nugroho (Indonesia), Boo Jun Feng 巫俊峰 (Singapore), Eric Khoo (Singapore), Pen-Ek Ratanaruang (Thailand) and Lav Diaz (Philippines) were invited for a special in-depth interview programme to showcase their creativity backgrounds, and also to share the drive behind their achievement.
A press conference was held on July 22, with Datuk Kamil Othman the Director-General of FINAS who’s also the special host of this programme, and together with 6 featured directors for an exclusive interview with media.
During the interview session, each of the special guest share their thought and advice as an Director to the young directors.
Datuk Kamil Othman thinks these kind of programmes plays an important role to promote the culture agenda, where audience are able to learn and understand the culture of different countries.
Pen-ek Ratanaruang grew up wanting to be a soccer player, and became a Director by chance and since then he loved what he does.
Garin Nugroho quoted that the current generation have technological advantages, there are basically nothing to stop you from becoming a Director.
Boo Jun Feng being the youngest director amongst all gave a valuable advice for all aspiring directors : “Take your time, and it will be paid off”
SEA Director Focus will be presented in 3 series, and the programme will be hosted by renown film historian and critical Hassan Muthalib interview with the 6 featured directors, to explore their inspiration behind their featured movies.

It is interesting to see how the movie industries will grow in the near future with the rise of technology, and let’s face it, everyone can be a director and all they need today is their creativity and imagination. What adds on a bit of flavour is the rich cultures in all the countries here in South East Asia.
SEA Director Focus will be on air every Wednesday at 10pm from October 2016 onwards on Astro A-List Channel (CH 456) at a monthly subscription of RM15.90.
